Former high school sweethearts Maddie and Nate are reunited when Nate returns to their hometown to lecture at the university's hospital. Maddie, who is still upset from their breakup, tries to stay away from him. However, they soon become friends, and Nate assists her in obtaining finance to develop her cupcake business. Just as Maddie and Nate are about to restart their romance, Nate receives word that he has been offered a job opportunity in Boston. When Maddie learns of his betrayal, she immediately returns the promise ring he had given her years before and prepares for the grand reopening of her shop. Nate quickly discovers how much he's left behind and must decide if his future rests in Boston with his job or in his hometown with Maddie, which is where he meets Maddie.
