Overview:
Marseilles, 1919. Georges Sarret is a well-known and renowned lawyer who was recently honored for his contributions during World War I. Philomène Schmidt, a young German woman who has recently lost her job and home, becomes his lover. To allow Philomène to stay in France, Georges finds her a spouse, who dies naturally a month after the wedding. Georges pulls the same ruse on Philomène's sister, Catherine, marrying her off to an elderly man who dies suddenly, allowing the devious trio to profit from his life insurance.
