Overview:
St. Elsewhere ran on NBC from October 26, 1982 to May 25, 1988. Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels played teaching doctors at a lightly-regarded Boston hospital who helped interns make vital medical and life decisions. MTM Enterprises had success with a comparable NBC series, Hill Street Blues, at the same time; both used ensemble actors and overlapping serialized stories. St. Elsewhere was filmed at CBS/MTM Studios, now CBS/Fox Studios; 20th Century Fox bought MTM Enterprises in the 1990s and acquired the series' rights. St. Elsewhere established a modest but dedicated following over its 6-season, 137-episode run. The series also achieved a solid audience in Nielsen's 18-49 age category, a youthful, wealthy audience that TV advertisers are eager to attract. The sitcom won 13 Emmys for writing, acting, and directing. St. Elsewhere scored #20 on TV Guide's 2002 list of "The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time." In 1993, the magazine named it the best 1980s drama.
