A young farmer girl named Mari Pataki lives in a small town that is going through a lot of hard changes. Her father says she can't go out with the man she loves. The father is mostly worried about work in the fields and making money, so he decides to marry off his daughter to an old but wealthy business partner. He says that land stays with land. This seems to be what the Hungarian peasants do no matter what. But Maris' young lover is willing to do anything to keep her love.
